Teaching and learning

We’ve been training clinical and non-clinical staff such as GPs, nurses, physician assistants, and clinical pharmacists for a while now. We believe that teaching and learning are really important. 📚💡

At our practice, we’re all about sharing knowledge and skills with each other. But you know what? We also learn a ton from our patients! That’s why we’ve been trying out new ways to communicate, like making videos and using social media. 🎥💬

By learning from each other and our patients, we’re always growing and getting better at what we do. It’s all about working together to provide the best care possible! 🌟👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

GP Training

Who

We are a training practice which means that we are accredited to provide training for staff. Amongst other, we provide training for GPs in the future.

First off, having more clinicians around means we can offer better support to our patients. 🩺💼

Training also helps our practice stay up-to-date and make sure we’re always improving. We’re constantly looking at our processes to keep things relevant and fresh. 💡

But one of the biggest reasons we do GP training is because we’re passionate about guiding and supporting people in their NHS careers. It’s a top priority for us as a practice. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

How

When eager young clinicians, fresh from rigorous academic training, team up with highly experienced doctors, everyone comes out on top. Patients receive the same top-notch care because GP trainees are closely supervised by our GPs. 🌟👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

But it’s not just the patients who benefit. GP trainees get an exciting and diverse start to their medical careers. 🎓💼

Our GP trainers also reap the rewards. Teaching gives them a chance to flex their “teaching muscle,” making them more reflective about their own work. It adds enjoyment to their day and reduces the risk of burnout. 🧠👩‍🏫

So, in the end, everyone wins! 🏆💖

Training

So what happens behind the scenes to support staff learning?

At our practice, we prioritise the training and development of all staff. 🌟 Each year, we create personalised development plans for our team members, and we conduct quarterly appraisals to monitor progress and provide support. 📆💼

Many of our staff members play dual roles, serving as mentors and supervisors for their colleagues. This fosters a nurturing environment where learning, teaching, collaboration, and innovation thrive. 👩‍🏫🤝

We actively encourage and support our staff to undertake additional training to advance their careers within the primary care setting. This approach promotes greater cohesion and collaboration among our team members. 💬👨‍⚕️

For instance, one of our Care Navigators, who is also a qualified Phlebotomist, has been given opportunities to train alongside our Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) and Phlebotomists. This not only enhances their skills but also strengthens teamwork and cooperation within our practice. 💉👩‍⚕️👨‍🔬

We recognise that success in providing patient centred care is founded on continued learning, development and innovation.

How do we learn?

Patient Feedback, Surveys and Complaints form the basis of learning and development and we share and discuss them. Below are samples of a few patient surveys and the outcomes.

Survey success

Here are some snippets of surveys we have learned from in recent years…

  1. Telephone Service Survey – following feedback a new telephone system was implemented by the practice which has led to shorter waiting times.
  2. Community Pharmacist Survey– following the feedback from this survey we now have a clinical pharmacist
  3. Patient Communication Survey – in response to Covid-19 we carried out a survey to see the patient’s preferred method of reciprocal communication platform.  That’s we’re communicating more using social media.
