Medications
So, you know those things like prescriptions, medications, tablets, and repeats? They all basically mean the same thing โ the stuff you take to feel better. At HIYOS, there are lots of ways you can ask for more of your meds when you need them. It’s easy!
Who
Sometimes you take medicine๐ – it could be something you had a while back (like a one-time thing) or something you take regularly, like once a week (that’s the repeat kind).
Parents can ask for your medicine for their children. And if someone’s taking care of you, like a carer, they can do it too, but only if you’re ok with it. So, it’s important that everyone’s on the same page!
Hospital outpatient prescriptions are designed to be dispensed by the hospital pharmacy.
Hospital or private prescriptions submitted to the practice will be considered on a case by case basis which may take longer than 3 working days. There are some medications that we cannot prescribe in general practice.
How
Getting your medicine is pretty easy, and there are a bunch of ways to do it. The fastest and simplest way is online, using the NHS App, if you want, we can totally help you with that.
To reduce wastage, just request what you need.
Or, if you like calling, you can ring us up between 0800-1000 from Monday to Friday. Just a heads up, we don’t do pharmacy requesting anymore, unless there’s something special we’ve worked out.
If you require extra assistance e.g. disability, housebound, please speak to our reception team.
We can send your prescription directly to your pharmacy, you can change this yourself on NHS App.
Medications from pharmacies for minor ailments
The pharmacy is not just a place just for collecting your NHS prescription ๐๐. It can also be where you can get advice on minor illnesses such as colds, fungal nail infections and more. In fact, the pharmacy is actually the best place that you can go for these minor ailments. We do not issue medication for minor ailments. This is due to government policy. The pharmacy team will offer help and advice on management of minor conditions. If your symptoms are more serious, they will help you get the advice you need.
Pharmacy First – urine infection
It takes
1
working day
for you to get your prescription sent to your pharmacy.
At HIYOS, when you ask for more of your NHS medications it usually just takes a day, sometimes even quicker โ like a few hours, we’re quick! We’ll send it straight to your preferred pharmacy and send you a text when it’s done. You may need a medication review from a GP or a clinical pharmacist.
The cost for a prescription is currently ยฃ9.90. You can use this tool to see if you are eligible for free prescriptions. If you have to pay, you can save money by paying in advance for the year, this is a prepayment certificate.
But here’s the top tip: try planning ahead and order your stuff in plenty of time. If, by chance, you run out and we’re closed, don’t stress! Talk to your usual pharmacy, and they might help you with an emergency supply. If you’re really stuck, call 111 or check their website. Ordering ahead is key here โ no stress.
Finally, If your medicine is out of date or not needed don’t put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet. Instead, take it to your pharmacy to be disposed of safely.
How can I order my repeat medication online?
Hey there! ๐ If you need your regular medicines (the ones on your repeats list), no worries! You can get them super easily through the NHS App, make sure you register.
Now, if you ever need something different, like a medicine not on your repeats list, we’ll need our clinicians to take a quick peek. Just give us a buzz between 8-10am, and press option 2. You can also shoot us a message online โ it’s as easy as texting a friend!
Sometimes, if your online medicine request is having a bit of a hiccup or if things have changed with your health, we might need to chat with you. No worries, it’s just to make sure you’re getting the best care.

Common questions
What are NHS Prescription costs?
The NHS is an amazing service that takes care of us when we’re not feeling well. It’s mostly free, but sometimes there’s a small charge for getting your prescribed medicines, which is currently ยฃ9.90. Don’t worry, though, the NHS still covers most of the cost, they just need a little help from you.
Now, if you’re pregnant, have a long-term health issue like diabetes, or are claiming certain benefits, you might be entitled to get your prescriptions for free. That’s pretty great, right?
But hey, if you’re buying more than two prescriptions every month, there’s something called a PPC, which stands for a Prescription Prepayment Certificate. It’s like a pass that helps you spend less money on prescriptions. You can choose between a 3-month or a 12-month pass, depending on what works best for you. It’s a smart way to save some cash!
What about private prescriptions?
If you get a prescription from a private doctor, it’s like a special note that lets you pick up your medicine from any pharmacy. But, here’s the thing โ in the NHS, we can’t always use those private doctor prescriptions because we have some rules to follow. Even if we can, there might be a bit of a wait.
Now, about the cost โ it really depends on what medicine you’re after. People often ask us about how much a private prescription for antibiotics costs. But, truth be told, it’s not an easy answer. It all depends on why you need the antibiotics and which ones you’ll be taking.
To get the lowdown on the cost, your best bet is to check with private pharmacies or other services. They’re the experts in this stuff. And hey, always make sure to talk to a medical pro before making any decisions. They’ve got your back!
What is repeat dispensing?
Repeat dispensing
๐ Imagine this โ what if your NHS prescription magically showed up at your pharmacy without you even asking? Well, guess what? We’ve got something fabulous called ‘repeat dispensing’ that does exactly that! It is for people who are stable and on regular medications. We’ll zip your NHS prescription straight to your pharmacy.
It’s like getting 6 batches of your monthly or two-monthly prescriptions all at once. No need to bug the practice or struggle with online orders. Just swing by the pharmacy when it’s time to grab your meds.
If this sounds like a fantastic plan, you can reach out to the practice anytime. Give us a ring between 8 AM and 10 AM from Monday to Friday, and we’ll set up a chat with our awesome clinical pharmacist. They’ll help figure out if repeat dispensing is the magic trick for you! ๐๐โจ
There are medication supply problems with the pharmacy. What do I do?
There are currently problems with some medications. Some are not available or in short supply. Speak to your pharmacist. If you get stuck, get in touch and we can arrange an alternative.
What if I haven’t had my medication for over 6 months?
If you haven’t had your medication for a while, get in touch between 0800-1000 and we can check where you are and arrange your medication after a review.
How do I get medication that a hospital has issued?
If it is urgent, you can usually pick up your medication from the hospital pharmacy. It can take a few days for us to review medication from the hospital and issue your medication. Do share any paperwork, as it takes a while before we get letters from the hospital.
